Happy 2025
Starting the New Year in Monterey, California
There’s no better way to welcome a fresh start than by escaping to our favorite coastal getaway: Monterey, California. This picturesque spot has become our go-to for relaxing and decompressing, not just for ringing in the New Year but whenever life gets too hectic. With its serene coastline, stunning views, and an abundance of photo opportunities, Monterey is a sanctuary for the soul—and my camera.
For me, relaxation often includes a midday nap and taking my camera gear out to explore familiar spots and discover new ones. Since we visit Monterey so often, I’ve learned to pare down my photography equipment, focusing instead on experimenting with new tools and techniques to reignite my creativity. Sometimes I come back with a shot that earns a coveted spot on our already overcrowded photo walls at home. Other times, it’s all about the process, and that’s okay too.
This trip, I brought along my newly acquired Panasonic Lumix G9II and three lenses I’ve been eager to try: the TTArtisan 17mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, and 50mm f/1.2. These manual-focus lenses bring me back to my roots in photography, reminding me of the days when focusing was an art form. While I’ll admit my focusing skills are a bit rusty—and my eyes aren’t quite as sharp as they used to be—the process of nailing focus with these lenses has been both humbling and rewarding.
When I did get the focus just right, the results blew me away. These TTArtisan lenses offer incredible sharpness, clarity, and a certain timeless quality that’s hard to describe. They’ve been a joy to use, and I love the value and character they bring to my photography. It’s a refreshing reminder that great gear doesn’t always have to come with a high price tag.
I also spent some time experimenting with the high-resolution mode on the Lumix G9II. While I haven’t fully reviewed the images yet, the process was exciting. The potential to capture every fine detail of Monterey’s breathtaking landscapes—whether it’s the rugged cliffs, the swirling ocean, or the soft light of a coastal sunset—adds a new dimension to my creative work. I can’t wait to dive into those files and see what magic the camera has captured.
This trip wasn’t just about the photos; it was about the experience. Whether I was exploring familiar spots or playing with new gear, every moment reminded me of why I fell in love with photography in the first place. Monterey continues to inspire, challenge, and relax me all at once.
If you’ve been thinking about a New Year’s getaway, I can’t recommend Monterey enough. And if you’re a photographer, it’s a playground that never disappoints. And while here don't forget to stop into Green's camera in the DelMonte Shopping center and check out all his great camera gear for sale and take a look at all the old cameras up on top of the shelves on display.
Here’s to a year filled with creativity, discovery, and the joy of simply enjoying the process.
